Black Student Retention Team

The Black Student Retention (BSR) Project is a key initiative within UC Berkeley’s African American Thriving Initiatives, providing holistic support to Black undergraduate students through tailored advising and community engagement opportunities. The BSR Project aims to enhance the student experience and improve retention by fostering academic success, personal growth, and community empowerment for Black students at Cal.

A collaborative effort between the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) and the African American Student Development Office (AASD), the BSR Project focuses on connecting students to essential resources and services that support their academic and personal success. The BSR Project supports Black students throughout their college journey, from pre-arrival to graduation, with an emphasis on three key areas: Readiness, Timeliness, and Wellness.

  • Readiness: We assess students' preparedness before they arrive, and provide personalized support to help them transition smoothly into college life and ensure they are equipped to succeed academically and personally.

  • Timeliness: We help students meet academic milestones and stay on track to graduate by offering targeted advising, monitoring academic progress, and intervening when necessary to overcome challenges.

  • Wellness: We prioritize students' mental, physical, and emotional health, promoting the development of healthy habits and strong community connections to ensure a positive college experience.
